What to Pack, What to Leave Behind: A First-Timer's Retreat Guide

Everything you need to know before your first NutriCove retreat — from practical packing lists to mindset preparation and what to expect on arrival.

You've booked your retreat. The dates are set. Now what? This guide covers everything from practical packing to mindset preparation — the things we wish every guest knew before Day 1.

What to Pack

Clothing:
- Light, breathable layers (both destinations are tropical)
- Comfortable clothes for yoga and movement (nothing restrictive)
- One outfit that makes you feel good for group dinners (casual-elegant, not formal)
- Swimwear (2-3 pieces recommended)
- A light cover-up or sarong
- Comfortable walking shoes for excursions
- Flip-flops or sandals for the resort
- A light rain jacket (tropical showers are brief but real)

Wellness:
- Your own journal (we also provide one)
- Sunscreen (reef-safe preferred)
- Bug spray (natural preferred — we also provide this)
- Any prescription medications (bring more than you need)
- Comfortable eye mask for sleeping and ceremonies

Leave Behind:
- Laptop (you won't need it)
- Work clothes (you definitely won't need them)
- Heavy books (your brain will be processing enough)
- Expectations about what "should" happen (more on this below)

We Provide:
- Yoga mats and props
- Beach towels
- All ceremony materials
- Journaling supplies
- Toiletries (organic, locally-sourced)
- Water bottles (filtered water available throughout the resort)

Preparing Your Mind

The most important packing happens internally. Here's how to prepare mentally for the retreat:

Set an intention, not a goal. There's a difference. A goal is outcome-based: "I will get over my ex." An intention is process-based: "I'm willing to explore what I'm holding onto and why." Intentions allow for surprise. Goals create pressure.

Tell the important people. Let your close friends, family, or partner know that you'll be largely unavailable for a week. Not just logistically — emotionally. Explain that you're doing deep personal work and may not want to text or call during the retreat. Setting this expectation before you leave prevents guilt and distraction during the retreat.

Start winding down. The three days before your retreat matter. If possible, reduce your workload, avoid intense social commitments, and begin slowing your pace. The transition from 100mph daily life to retreat speed is jarring if you arrive straight from chaos.

Address the fear. Almost every first-time guest experiences some version of: "What if I cry in front of strangers?" "What if the therapy is too intense?" "What if I hate it?" These fears are normal and valid. Name them. Write them down. Then remember: every guest before you has felt the same way, and the overwhelming majority describe the retreat as one of the most meaningful experiences of their lives.

What to Expect on Arrival

Day 0 (Arrival Day):
You'll be met at the airport by our transfer team. The drive to the resort is part of the transition — watch the landscape change from urban to rural to lush. Arrive, check in to your villa, take a breath.

In the evening, there's a welcome gathering — a casual dinner where you'll meet the other guests and the facilitators. No therapy happens on arrival day. It's purely social and orienting. The practitioner will introduce the week's arc, and you'll feel the group starting to form.

Day 1:
The first Guided Transformation Session happens in the morning. It's focused on arrival — settling into the space, setting intentions, and beginning to name what brought you here. It's gentle. The deep work starts on Day 2.

The Rhythm:
Within 48 hours, you'll settle into the daily rhythm: sunrise meditation, yoga, breakfast, therapy session, free time, lunch, afternoon activity, sunset practice, dinner, evening ceremony. By Day 3, you won't need to check the schedule — your body will know.

Common First-Timer Concerns

"I'm not a yoga person."
You don't need to be. Our yoga sessions are accessible to all levels, including complete beginners. It's about breath and movement, not flexibility or performance.

"I've never done therapy."
That's fine. The Guided Transformation Sessions are designed to be accessible whether you have years of therapy experience or none. The practitioner creates safety and guides the process. Your only job is to show up willing.

"I'm traveling alone."
So are most of our guests. Solo travelers consistently report that the retreat is a powerful antidote to loneliness — you'll form meaningful connections within the first 48 hours.

"I'm worried about the ceremonies."
All ceremonies are optional. No one is pressured to participate in anything they're uncomfortable with. You can observe, step out, or skip entirely. There are always alternative activities available.

One Last Thing

The most transformative thing you can pack is willingness. Willingness to be uncomfortable. Willingness to feel things you've been avoiding. Willingness to be seen by strangers who are going through the same thing.

You don't need to arrive healed. You don't need to arrive ready. You just need to arrive willing.

We'll handle the rest.
